Review: Sellers to avoid at DHgate Reply to topic Reply with quote

Post Posted: Sun Jun 24, 2007 3:21 am

Review of DHgate, DHgates systems etc also discussed. Trust? Escrow? reliable? fraud? scam? danger? warning? beware? experience... read on...

<Begin EDIT>
This topic was originally in the "photographic equipment you own" thread. But has taken a life of its own.

I have shifted it to the Sin Bin thread to warn buyers against the following:
Dhgate Sellers:
Frank_Win

Summer_You
Real name: youyong ? (Female)
Location: Guangdong

If you want to know some of the background click here:
Hidden Content:

They offer their wears on a website called www.dhgate.com - the site looks much like eBay but deals with China wholesalers direct (supposedly). Some of the prices are very expensive - others are very attractive - and tempting enough to get even me in trouble it appears!

Dhgate offer to accept payment via PayPal and then dhgate holds that Money in escrow for buyer safety until the ordered goods are received.

This sounds all good in theory - but try getting your money back when the goods are either not sent or the wrong goods are sent and all of a sudden the system looks far less attractive.

1) You have to go through a lengthy mediation system that can be dragged out for a long period. Long enough to make PayPal and Credit card claims no longer an option.

2) They suggest you can open disputes - but you have to wait until their system updates to indicate delivery has occurred before the dispute option becomes available!? - in the mean time you can only send messages to the seller through the order system not the dispute system.

3) It shows a feedback system like eBays but the tab that allows you to enter a Positive, neutral or negative feedback with a comment does not actually come with a submit button. This again may appear after delivery and after any disputes have been closed?

4) Their support people do not respond. I was lucky though - Linda chased me up as I had placed an order with the first seller but got nervous and had not completed it by paying - she sent an email as a follow up from which I got her skype contact details so via skype she has been very helpful - to a point... now the service contacts that she passed me on to are not replying.

As a result of these 2 failed purchases I have discovered a few things as you will find out if you read through this thread:

1) PayPal offers ZERO buyer protection.

If you receive an empty box then they class that as a completed transaction and will refuse any claims. Based on an empty box becoming a dispute on the attributes or quality of the supplied items, which they consider not worthy of refunding your money for. Order a $1000 item get an empty box and it is all the same to them!?

2) Do not trust anyone - if you can't reach out and slap them for doing you wrong then they most likely will try it on.

Again I am not sure I want to discredit dhgate here just yet - as even on eBay you get some bad sellers - but all the web reviews I have read on dhgate have mostly been negative.

Even though I gave their system the benefit of the doubt - I am now not sure that was the wisest thing to do. I had hoped it was just a case of those who complain - do so more often and louder than those who praise. Guess I was wrong here.

I will update this though if Dhgate comes through with a refund before my credit card charge back process is finalised.

If you need to get in contact with people at DHGATE to chase your own issues up then here is a list of contacts I have found so far:

Now to the story:
</ end EDIT>

After thinking about buying the
Panasonic Z30

and then the Z50

I almost jumped the gun and bought the Canon 350D. Luckily I held off as the Canon 400D comes with a built in sensor element vibrator to shake dust off of the CMOS chip. And a few other nicer features.

My big issue about these DSLR's is I am a creature of convenience and these are anything but!

No Movie recording
No LCD viewing to assist with the shot - all shots are taken via the view finder.
No 1 lens does it all - need to carry multiple lens's.

But on the plus side - awesome crystal clear photos - limted only by ones budget to buy decent low F stop rated lens's!!

As my budget is not that huge - I have been hunting ebay for a very long time. The twin lens kit sells between $1150 and $1400+ on ebay. Missed a few second hand ones that went for bugger all - or had zero bids (could have grabbed one for $900)

These Canon 400D's retail for around $1450 to $1600 when bought in a twin lens kit.
This place sells them for $1239 + $28 delivery - but they import their own so they come with no Australain warranty! So I thought I might as well get one myself.

Came across www.dhgate.com - it is a China version of Ebay - found a twin lens kit with some extras for all up $924 delivered - but I hesitated as I did not trust the reviews of the dhgate web system I had read via a google search...

Eventually emailed the seller - he said - yes plenty of stock - so i sent the money - then sent a stack of emails with no reply - eventually he replies with - sorry no stock!! Grrrr!

I panicked a little and requested my money back from Dhgates escrow system - took days to get a response - had to chase "linda" down via Skype. She was very helpful.

I now have negotiated a slightly more expensive buy price through her with another seller for a much better kit. I just hope this one comes through as at this stage the EMS tracking number has no information on the EMS site...

So what did I get:

Picture shows XT - but had a disclaimer underneath saying ignore this - go by description (Camera differs from the above)

ok - the EMS tracking number is now active so that is a good sign. I just hope this cam is not:
Fake
reconditioned
or a 350D instead of a 400D
Or worse still broken!!

It has an LCD but this is for settings and for after shot viewing but it seems all true DSLR's are view finder only for taking shots... This will be hard to get used to again!

Pfft I reckon they just make it view finder only so that the pro's can make themselves feel hardcore.

Not entirely sure on the mechanics of it - but as the optics are - well true optics and what you see is pure image reflected through the lens and the prism or mirrors directly to your eye - there is no real way the image can be displayed on the LCD until after the shot is taken.

With pretend DSLR's like my minolta the view finder (EVF) is actually just another smaller LCD so it is not a true view but a digitally processed view.

This enables true DSLR to boot up and take photos almost instantly with ultra fast focus etc etc. As there is no delay whilst the camera tries to display a picture on the LCD.

hahaha - Cry...

A Camera arrived today... I say 'a' as it was not a 400D nor an XTi US version as promised nor even a Kiss digital X.

What they sent me was:
Kiss N (350D) 8MP camera - could have bought one of these off of ebay for bugger all now.
1 x Lens - 18-55mm Canon kit lens
1 x 4GB CF card
1 x External flash unit
1 x Crappy little carry bag - not what was pictured and would not fit the Camera and more than 1 lens.
And that my friends is it!!

Added to the fun - the camera is currently set to Chinese characters so bugger if I know what any of the settings are - that are not obvious.

<EDIT - found the language setting - fixed it - now in english! Very Happy >

Hmmm and a reminder of what was supposed to be included:

All items below are included with this package:

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi SLR Camera
Supplied Accessories:
NB-2LH Battery Pack
Battery Charger
Power Cord for Battery Charger
USB Interface Cable
Video Cable
Neck Strap
Viewfinder & Body Caps
EOS Digital Solutions CD-ROM:
-ZoomBrowser EX
-ImageBrowser
-ArcSoft PhotoStudio
Digital Photo Professional 1.6 CD-ROM (for RAW file conversion)
Instruction Manual CD-ROM
Owner's Manual

Bonus Package:
4GB Compact Flash Memory Card
Tamron 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 Autofocus Lens
Tamron 75-300mm F/4-5.6 LD Macro Autofocus Lens
0.45x Wide Angle Converter Lens
Digital SLR Slave Flash with Bracket
Black Stylish Camera & Accessory Case
Table-Top Tripod
Full Size Tripod
Deluxe Photo/Video Cleaning Kit
Digital Camera Memory Card Wallet
Pack of LCD screen protectors

I have raised this with "Linda" From Dhgate - so I will wait 12 to 24 hours to see what she can do for me...

I will refuse to send this one back until I have 100% refund or what I paid for in good faith - i.e. the above kit in my hands.

If they do not agree to these terms I will do a charge back via Pay pal or directly via my Credit card if Pay pal tries to be difficult. Either way I will not be paying to send this Camera back at my cost!

Bloody hell - you trust people and it comes back to bite you. So far I recommend staying away from Dhgate until further notice. I also recommend until further notice that if you don't stay away from Dhgate definitely stay away from Summer_you - he is the seller that I bought this camera from. The original Seller who also shafted me to begin with was "Frank_win"

Grumble grumble grumble! I guess it all comes back to that old saying - "If it sounds to good to be true - it probably is!"
